As an intense heat wave is set to sweep across much of the province, truckers and physical laborers must be extra vigilant to protect their health. Environment Canada forecasts a humidex index exceeding 40 for the afternoons of Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with maximum temperatures ranging from 30 to 34°C, and nighttime lows above 20°C.

Starting Monday, abnormally high temperatures are expected in the western, central, and southern parts of the province. Maximum temperatures could reach around 35 degrees in some areas, with a perceived temperature potentially hitting up to 45 degrees in Montreal, particularly on Wednesday. The heat and humidity are expected to begin easing from Friday onwards.

This exceptional heat wave is also affecting the U.S. East Coast, bringing record temperatures and raising concerns about public health and infrastructure. Local authorities and meteorologists are warning of increased risks, especially for the elderly, children, and those with chronic illnesses.

Since the beginning of the week, cities like New York, Washington D.C., and Philadelphia have been experiencing temperatures exceeding 38 degrees Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit). In New York, the thermometer reached 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) yesterday afternoon, setting a new record for June. Meteorologists predict that this heat wave will persist for several more days, exacerbated by high humidity levels that increase the heat index.

Precautions for truckers and physical laborers

1. Constant Hydration: It is crucial to drink water regularly to avoid dehydration. Carry extra water bottles and avoid sugary or alcoholic beverages.

2. Frequent Breaks: Take frequent breaks in the shade or in air-conditioned environments to allow your body to cool down.

3. Appropriate Clothing: Wear light-colored, lightweight clothing to reflect heat. Use caps or hats to protect your head from the sun.

4. Health Monitoring: Be alert for signs of heat stroke, such as dizziness, nausea, headaches, and excessive fatigue. If you experience these symptoms, stop all physical activity immediately and seek a cool place.

5. Route Planning: Try to plan your routes and most demanding tasks during the coolest parts of the day, either early in the morning or late in the evening.

With an exceptional heat wave expected this week, it is imperative for truckers and physical laborers to take extra precautions to ensure their safety and well-being. By following these tips, you can minimize the risks associated with extreme temperatures and continue to work efficiently and safely.
