Pilot project on highway 11 speed limit near North Bay made permanent

The Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) has announced that the pilot project raising the speed limit from 100 to 110 kilometers per hour on Highway 11, south of North Bay, is now permanent.

In 2022, the MTO permanently increased the speed limit to 110 km/h on several highway sections, including two trial sections in northern Ontario. One of these sections is near South River.

The pilot project was implemented to assess the impacts of the increased speed limit on road safety, traffic flow, and transportation efficiency. Positive results observed on these trial sections have led the MTO to adopt this measure permanently.

Reactions from motorists and local residents are mixed. Some welcome the decision, believing it allows for better traffic flow and reduced travel times. Others have expressed concerns about potential risks to road safety.

The MTO has stated that it will continue to monitor the affected sections to ensure road user safety is maintained and to make necessary adjustments if any issues arise.
