
Significant progress in the Blue Water Bridge rehabilitation: The Federal Bridge Corporation Limited provides an update
The Federal Bridge Corporation Limited (FBCL) recently provided a mid-term update on the progress of the ongoing rehabilitation project of the second Blue Water Bridge (SPBW). This critical infrastructure project, essential for maintaining the safety and efficiency of this vital international crossing, is progressing according to schedule, with 45% of the work completed as of July 31, 2024.
Major advancements include the milling of the asphalt surface, the removal of the waterproofing membrane, and the grinding of the concrete surface. The in-depth concrete repairs, now 50% complete, represent a key milestone in this project. Additionally, the concrete covering of the sidewalk has been removed, and various sidewalk repairs, including its curb, are progressing satisfactorily. Waterproofing and paving work is expected to begin in mid-September, ensuring that the project remains on track.
Traffic management during this complex rehabilitation has been efficient, largely due to the continuous operation of the EXPRES toll lane, which is crucial for the flow of commercial trucks. The dedicated local traffic lane has also contributed to minimizing disruptions for residents and local businesses, ensuring smooth traffic on Highway 402 and facilitating travel to the United States. Despite the crossing being limited to a single bidirectional bridge, traffic congestion has remained within acceptable levels, comparable to pre-project conditions. This success is attributed to the diligent management of dedicated lanes by police authorities.
Close collaboration between the FBCL and the Michigan Department of Transportation has been crucial for effective traffic management. By incorporating lessons learned from previous projects, the two entities have optimized the planning and execution of the work. Furthermore, the continuous support from the Canada Border Services Agency and U.S. Customs and Border Protection has been vital in maintaining smooth traffic flow during this critical phase.
