Erinion has been established by Scania to provide depot or destination charging solutions, aiming to accelerate the adoption and spread of electric trucks in line with its goal of promoting a sustainable transport system. Erinion’s solutions will enable customers to seamlessly convert their existing fleets to emission-free vehicles with optimal availability. This will be a key factor in achieving Scania’s declared ambition to make 50% of its annual vehicle volume electric by 2030.

Depot or destination charging

Several studies predict that depot charging will be the preferred choice for short and long-distance operations. Complementing public charging networks, this client depot or predefined private location charging offers numerous advantages: predictable charging schedules ensuring fully charged trucks, increased uptime, and thus maximum operational efficiency leading to savings through predictable and stable energy costs tailored to each client’s specific operations.

Depot or destination charging also allows optimization of power levels and charging schedules while improving battery life and overall vehicle efficiency. Additionally, since depot charging often occurs during off-peak hours, electricity rates are lower and better controlled, while destination charging can be done opportunistically during driver waiting, working, or rest times.

Scania’s research, validated through pilot programs with customers, reveals the significant savings potential of enhanced charging solutions. Customers can expect up to a 50% reduction in investment needs and operational savings of up to 15,000 euros per truck each year.

Customized solutions

Today, depot charging is increasingly advanced. It goes beyond the provision of chargers, network connection, and installation. With the new company, Scania’s transport sector customers can benefit from advanced integrated software and hardware, as well as operational and support services. Modular solutions designed for this purpose can be offered in a standard resale model (with cash payment) or a hybrid-flexible pricing model allowing customers to combine upfront payments, lease-financing contracts, and service and maintenance rents.

Initially, the new company will establish its market presence in Sweden, Norway, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, France, and Germany. A global rollout will follow in due course. The agnostic approach ensures that companies of all types, regardless of vehicle brand, can benefit from Erinion’s charging infrastructure and operational services. By 2030, 230,000 electric trucks are expected to be on European roads. To support this growth, Erinion plans to install at least 40,000 charging points at its customers’ locations by 2030.

“With our solution, customers can have peace of mind and focus on their core business, while a specialized charging unit takes care of the hardware, software, financing, and operational services needed to operate large-scale charging with superior quality and profitability,” explains Jonas Hernlund, Head of Energy and Infrastructure at Scania Group.

“During the transition, the transport system will be redefined. Our new depot charging solutions company is an excellent example of an initiative that will play a significant role for our customers in the future transport ecosystem during the transition to electric transportation,” stated Gustaf Sundell, Vice President and Head of Ventures and New Business at Scania Group.
