[I80 Wyoming] Major Crash and Fire at Green River Tunnel: Investigation Ongoing

UPDATE ON THE GREEN RIVER TUNNEL

All hands are on deck at the Green River Tunnel on Interstate 80 in southwestern Wyoming, with personnel from the Wyoming Highway Patrol (WHP), WYDOT District 3, and other state and local partners actively working at the scene.

The active fire inside the tunnel initially delayed investigation efforts, but the WHP Crash Investigation Team has now arrived and will provide updates as soon as they become available. There is no official update yet on the number of fatalities or injuries.

“First responders bravely worked through the night to fight the fire in the tunnel, and we could not be more appreciative of their teamwork and support,” said WHP Lt. Col. Karl Germain.

Initial reports indicate that the February 14 crash involved multiple passenger and commercial vehicles in the middle and western sections of the westbound tunnel at mile marker 90.2 on I-80. More details will be shared as they become available.

WHP teams and local towing companies are actively working to remove damaged and abandoned vehicles from the tunnel. Traffic continues to be rerouted: westbound traffic is being diverted at mile marker 91, while eastbound traffic is redirected at mile marker 89 through Green River. Authorities urge drivers to respect posted speed limits while passing through the community.

WYDOT engineers have confirmed that the eastbound tunnel remains structurally sound and will be able to reopen for traffic once the westbound crash site has been cleared.

The fiery crash in the westbound tunnel caused electrical equipment and lighting to fall from the ceiling, while thick soot has accumulated and will require extensive cleaning. WYDOT engineers are waiting for the tunnel to be fully cleared before conducting a complete damage assessment.

“Initial investigations show no signs of collapse in the westbound tunnel,” said WYDOT Director Darin Westby. “My thoughts and prayers remain with those involved in the crash and the first responders working at the scene.”
