CVSA: An Important Member of a Trucking Company’s Safety Team
Montreal, February 18, 2025 – Once again this year, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) is working to make the roads safer for everyone. However, because the CVSA members that drivers interact with are often law enforcement officers, many misunderstand the organization’s purpose and membership.
The CVSA is actually a nonprofit organization composed of local, state, provincial, territorial, and federal commercial motor vehicle safety officials, as well as industry representatives such as carriers, manufacturers, educators, suppliers, vendors, schools, insurers, and trucking associations.
Standardized Inspection Processes
While vehicle inspections are only one aspect of CVSA’s work, they are crucial. The Alliance determines what should be inspected, how it should be done, and what criteria define a defect. This ensures that inspections are conducted the same way whether in Saskatchewan, Georgia, Maine, or even Chihuahua, Mexico.
The CVSA hosts workshops and conferences to refine inspection lists and procedures, train inspectors and technicians, and even hold the North American Inspectors Championship, where top inspectors compete against one another.
Major Safety and Inspection Events
One of the most anticipated – and sometimes dreaded – CVSA events is the International Roadcheck, an annual 72-hour inspection blitz across North America. In 2024, nearly 49,000 inspections were conducted, leading to 23% of vehicles and 4.8% of drivers being placed out of service.
To avoid inspection delays or violations, some drivers choose to stay off the roads during this period, which affects freight rates as demand for available trucks increases. However, the event also encourages thorough vehicle checks and raises public awareness about trucking safety.
CVSA 2025 Event Schedule

• Operation Safe Driver(focus on both truck and passenger vehicle drivers)
During the 2023 event, officers issued 2,634 citations to commercial vehicle driversand 1,860 to passenger vehicle drivers.
Combatting Human Trafficking: A Critical Initiative
One lesser-known CVSA initiative is its fight against human trafficking. In collaboration with Truckers Against Trafficking (TAT), the CVSA distributes educational materials to carriers and drivers and has produced awareness videos airing on Pluto TV, Paramount+, and other platforms.

A Key Partner in Trucking Safety
While some drivers view the CVSA as just another inspection body, it plays a much broader role. From vehicle safety to inspector training and anti-human trafficking efforts, the CVSA is a critical ally of the trucking industry.
