WYDOT District 3 Reopens Eastbound I-80 Tunnel to Head-to-Head Traffic

WYDOT District 3 has reopened the eastbound Interstate 80 tunnel, setting up head-to-head traffic today. Crews have installed over 5,000 feet of concrete barrier and additional traffic control signage and devices to help guide drivers safely through the area.

“We are treating it a lot like a typical construction zone on Interstate 80, but with some added safety measures,”said WYDOT District 3 Engineer John Eddins.

A reduced speed limit of 35 mphis in effect from mile marker 90 to mile marker 91, with advanced signage helping drivers prepare for and navigate the head-to-head lanes. Additionally, crews have installed screens on the concrete barriers to reduce headlight glare from opposing traffic.

While Interstate 80 traffic is now routed back through the tunnel, delays should still be expecteddue to the reduced lanes and lower speed limits.

“This will help get interstate traffic moving on the highway again and out of Green River, but congestion will still be a factor,”Eddins added.

There is a 10.5 ft. width and 16 ft. height restrictionfor the eastbound tunnel head-to-head lanes. Oversized vehiclesshould contact the Wyoming Highway Patrol’s oversize loads permit officefor detours. More information is available at: whp.wyo.gov/commercial-carrier/ports-of-entry.

WYDOT expressed gratitude to DeBernardi Constructionand S & L Industrialfor their swift and efficient work in installing the necessary traffic control measures.

Work is ongoing in the westbound tunnel, including cleanup operations and assessments. Motorists are urged to drive cautiouslyand remain aware of roadside workers and vehicles.
