The Canadian Steel Producers Association (CSPA) is calling on the Canadian government to use the temporary U.S. tariff suspension as an opportunity to strengthen high-risk sectors before duties resume.

In a statement today, CSPA President & CEO Catherine Cobden welcomed the one-month pause on 25% tariffs until April 2 but warned that this does not eliminate the threat of future trade restrictions.

“This reprieve gives Canada a chance to prepare for the likelihood of future tariffs imposed by our largest trading partner, particularly on our most vulnerable sectors,” Cobden stated.

With IEEPA tariffs set to return on April 2, CSPA is urging swift action to mitigate economic damage, reclaim the domestic market, and seek long-term trade solutions with the U.S.

The association is pressing the government to implement immediate support measures to protect Canada’s steel industry, its workforce, and the broader trade relationship with the U.S.
