Strengthening Law Enforcement in the Trucking Industry: The CRA and Labour Program Sign a Data-Sharing Agreement
Ottawa, March 7, 2025 – The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and the Labour Program of Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) are joining forces to strengthen tax and labor law enforcement in the trucking sector. Élisabeth Brière, Minister of National Revenue, and Steven MacKinnon, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development, and Labour, announced today the signing of a data-sharing agreement to improve compliance among federally regulated trucking companies.
A Data-Sharing Initiative for Better Law Enforcement
As part of the 2024 budget measures, this initiative will enable the CRA to receive information from the Labour Program to facilitate inspections and law enforcement. The goal is to maximize efficiency in addressing worker misclassification, wage theft, and tax non-compliance.
“The CRA and the Labour Program are committed to fighting unfair labor practices to ensure that workers receive the protections they are entitled to under the Canada Labour Code and that tax obligations under the Income Tax Act are upheld,” stated Ministers Brière and MacKinnon.
A Major Step Toward a Fairer Industry
This agreement marks the first step toward a broader data-sharing framework between the two agencies. By improving transparency and collaboration, the initiative will help protect the integrity of the trucking sector and ensure fair working conditions.
As part of this effort, the CRA has also launched a pilot project on personal service businesses (PSBs) to analyze their business practices and better educate companies about their tax obligations. The results of the project’s second phase are now available at canada.ca/pilot-personal-service-business.
A Commitment to Fairness and Integrity
The signing of this agreement represents a significant advancement in combating abuses within the trucking sector. By effectively sharing data, the CRA and the Labour Program reaffirm their commitment to promoting fair conditions and ensuring that all businesses comply with their tax and legal obligations.
